Mary Vernon: Recent Work, February 16 through Mach 12, in the Baugh Center for Visual Arts Gallery

Mary Vernon: Recent Work Exhibit

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Art Department are proud to present the exhibition Mary Vernon: Recent Work, February 16 through Mach 12, in the Baugh Center for Visual Arts Gallery. The artist will present a gallery talk on the exhibition’s opening night at 5 p.m. Both the talk and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

The exhibition will feature the recent paintings of the prominent Dallas artist, Mary Vernon. About her work she says, “In the world of still life and landscape, conceptual events meet one another – the structural meets the narrative, the small stands in the space of the very large, and color has a chance to navigate these meetings, changing everything. All my paintings show this shifting world.”

Vernon serves as Professor of Art at Southern Methodist University. She teaches painting and drawing, and SMU’s noted color theory course. She was born in Southern New Mexico, educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Vernon has shown her work in France, Hungary, and Kazakhstan.

Vernon has served as President of SMU’s Faculty Senate, as a member of the Public Art Committee of the City of Dallas Cultural Affairs Committee, the Board of Directors of the National Council of Art Administrators, as a Trustee of the Dallas Museum of Art, and as Chair of the Division of Art at SMU.

Baugh Center for the Visual Arts Gallery hours are 9 A.M. to 4 P.M., Monday through Friday. For more information visit the art department website or contact Hershall Seals.

Pianist Dr. Michelle Schumann will be reuniting with vibraphone virtuoso Graeme Francis for the North Star concert.

Belton, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Visual and Performing Arts continues its Hillman Artist Series with “North Star,” a concert that re-unites acclaimed vibraphone virtuoso Graeme Francis and award-winning pianist Dr. Michelle Schumann for a juxtaposition of famous Minimalist and Baroque works.  This special chamber music presentation will take place on Thursday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hughes Recital Hall or Presser Hall on the UMHB campus. This concert is free and open to the public.

Continuing to build off a program created more than four years ago, the concert seeks to re-define views on traditional chamber programming by pairing works by J.S. Bach with the modern iconic works of Philip Glass, Keith Jarrett, Dan Becker, John Luther Adams, Erik Satie, and Arvo Part. The concert will be performed with accompanying projected visual effects. The event promises a meditative and transfiguring journey that will transport concert-goers to new spaces.

This concert is made possible through the generous support of the Helen Frances Hillman Fund for Scholarly Exchange.  The Hillman Visiting Artist Recital Series is underwritten by The Helen Frances Hillman Fund for Scholarly Exchange. The fund was established in 1999 by Dr. Jimmye S. Hillman in honor of his wife, Helen Frances Smith Hillman, Mary Hardin-Baylor Class of 1946. The fund was designed to foster scholarly exchange at UMHB, particularly in the area of fine arts, music and languages. All performances in the Hillman Visiting Artist Series are free and open to the public.

This concert qualifies as a Fine Arts Experience (FAE) credit for UMHB students. The Fine Arts Experience program endeavors to expose students to a wide variety of artistic expression during their time on campus. To this end, students are required to attend at least one designated Fine Arts Experience event each semester.

UMHB Opera presents The Magic Flute on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the CAC

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Opera program under the direction of George Hogan will present two performances of The Magic Flute on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Azalee Marshall Cultural Activities Center (CAC) in Temple.

The Magic Flute, an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart premiered in Vienna in 1791. The Magic Flute is a Singspiel which is a popular form of opera, using both singing and spoken dialogue. The story deals with a power struggle between two mighty adversaries, The Queen of the Night and Sarastro, who are battling over the custody and education of the Queen’s daughter, Princess Pamina.

Pamina is held captive by Sarastro. Her mother, the Queen of the Night, finds a prince, Tamino, to send on a mission to rescue her. Tamino, having seen a portrait of the beautiful Pamina, is determined to win her. He takes with him Papageno, a bird-catcher. Pamina is rescued by Papageno from the clutches of Monostatos, Sarastro's servant. Tamino is persuaded that Sarastro is not a cruel enemy but simply concerned with the cause of virtue. Tamino and Papageno agree to undergo the trials of initiation into Sarastro's brotherhood. The adventurers are assisted by magic bells and a magic flute, given to them by the Queen, with the assistance of the Three Ladies. Tamino and Papageno are guided by three Spirits. The trials demand silence and restraint. Papageno is less successful than Tamino, but he is still rewarded with a bride, Papagena. Tamino, eventually with Pamina at his side, completes the final trials. The Queen of the Night attacks the Temple but is defeated by Sarastro, his spiritual power renewed by the virtue of Tamino and Pamina.

This concert qualifies as a Fine Arts Experience (FAE) credit for UMHB students. The Fine Arts Experience program endeavors to expose students to a wide variety of artistic expression during their time on campus. To this end, students are required to attend at least one designated Fine Arts Experience event each semester.

General admission tickets to the performances are $15. Seniors, students, and children can get in for just $5. Tickets can be purchased from the CAC box office one hour prior to each performance.

Crusader Knights Contest

Monday, February 16, 2015
The sixteenth annual Crusader Knights set for Saturday, February 21, in the W. W. Walton Chapel at 7 p.m.

Belton, Texas –The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will present the sixteenth annual Crusader Knights contest on Saturday, February 21, in the W. W. Walton Chapel on the UMHB campus at 7 p.m.  The program is open to the public, and tickets may be purchased this week from Campus Activities office, located in the Bawcom Student Union, or at the door for $7.

The contest determines who will represent the university as Mr. Crusader Knight 2015.  Various campus organizations sponsor contestants. The program will include music, dancing, and humorous videos that have been produced by the contestants. The winner will be crowned and dubbed Mr. Crusader Knight by President Randy O’Rear. The director of this year’s contest is Alec Lloyd of Kingwood. His assistant directors are Lauren Murphy of Kingwood, Andrew Alvarez of Bedford, and James Ewing of Lancaster.

In recent years the Crusader Knights contest has taken place over two nights. Lloyd decided to shift the event back to its roots, which meant a lighter tone and a shorter schedule.

“We wanted to get back to what Crusader Knights once was, a fun spoof of the Miss MHB Pageant,” Lloyd said. “Part of that meant going back to one night rather than it being a two night, more serious event.”

Last year’s theme was “Roaring 20’s.” For this year, the festivities will jump forward seven decades for “90’s.” Performances will center on favorite boy bands and other cultural benchmarks of the period.

“We wanted it to be really fun and goofy,” Lloyd said. “We wanted something that could showcase each guy’s personality.”

The theme did require Lloyd to do some extra research as he was born early in the decade and was still in grade school when it was over.

“It’s been a learning process for me,” Lloyd said. “I’ve been listening to a lot of different types of music and watching old TV shows to get ideas about wardrobe.”

There have also been big changes made to the format of Crusader Knights.

“We’ve worked to simplify it and find the core of what showcased our students the best,” Jeff Sutton, Assistant Director of Campus Activities said.

“One of the big changes is that Cru Knights went from having several small musical numbers to one large number,” Sutton said. “It incorporates music from throughout the decade and features 42 different students.”

Students participating include Wesley Ashton of Lewisville representing Mr. Search Cru; Wes Bailey of Belton representing Mr. Student Foundation; Kevin Bickling of Leander representing Mr. Gamma Beta Phi; Matthew Boden of Fort Worth representing Mr. Baptist Student Ministry; Chris Brown of Copperas Cove representing Mr. Freedom Movement; Jacob Bulringame of Gainesville representing Mr. Freshman Class; Kelley Clark of Brock representing Mr. Johnson Hall; Deshon Kinsey of Mart representing Mr. Senior Class; Brandon Landrum of Richardson representing Mr. Remschel Hall; Riley Massey of Coppell representing Mr. Astra Club; Seth Michaelson of Tomball representing Mr. Campus Activities Board; Aaron Midkiff of Grandview representing Mr. First Year Council; Justin Moore of Deer Park representing Mr. McLane Hall; Kevin Orr of Kingwood representing Mr. Burt Hall; Quinton Payton of Tomball representing Mr. Independence Village; Ryan Quinn of Magnolia representing Mr. American Marketing Association; Adam Ramirez of Waelder representing Mr. College View Apts.; Alvaro Noriega Ramirez of Rockwall representing Mr. Sigma Pi (Chemistry Club); Grady Roach of Allen representing Mr. Gettys Hall; Austin Soto of New Braunfels representing Mr. Sophomore Class; David Taylor of The Woodlands representing Mr. Student Government Association.

UMHB’s spring Reaching Out Saturday, March 7. Registration 8:00 a.m. in the McLane Great Hall inside Bawcom Student Union

Belton, Texas - University of Mary Hardin-Baylor students, faculty, and staff members will be participating in UMHB’s spring Reaching Out this Saturday, March 7. Reaching Out is a student-led event that sends participants to nonprofit organizations throughout Central Texas to serve.

The event is organized by the UMHB Student Government Association (SGA). An estimated 350 students, faculty, and staff work from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in the McLane Great Hall inside the Bawcom Student Union. This registration has traditionally been held in front of Luther Memorial, but it was moved indoors this year due to concerns with weather.

“It’s great to show that we as students are able to make a difference in our community,” Alex Aleman, Director of Spiritual Life for the Student Government Association, said.

Students will come in and choose where they want to serve and in what capacity.

This year volunteers will have a wide variety of roles in which they can choose to serve. Some will be cleaning stables at Ann Heartfield’s Ranch. Others will be assisting with a garage sale at the Bell County Museum. The Texas Men group will be helping with a basketball tournament. Other volunteers will be preparing or distributing food for Churches Touching Lives for Christ or Helping Hands. Other volunteers will be working outdoors on playgrounds, gardens and grounds for groups including: Central Texas Children’s Center, Family Promise, Hope Pregnancy Center, Peaceable Kingdom, and Soggy Bottoms Goat Farms.

“My hope is that even with the bad weather, students still come out and make an impact on the community,” Aleman said.

An Evening With Luci Swindoll will be held in the Mayborn Campus Center, Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m.

Belton, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Alumni Association will host an evening with acclaimed speaker and best-selling author Luci Swindoll on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the arena of the Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center on the UMHB campus. Swindoll is UMHB alumna from the class of 1955. Tickets to the event are free and are available on a first-come, first served basis through the Alumni Association.

“We are honored to host Luci Swindoll on our campus,” Dr. Rebecca O’Banion, Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, said.  “We are so proud of all she has accomplished and the thousands of people she has impacted through her life and work.”

Swindoll has embraced a life of adventure. She spent 30 years working as a corporate executive for Mobil Oil, she worked as a professional opera singer, and has written more than a dozen books. Today she travels the nation, speaking to more than 350,000 women each year as one of the original speakers of the Women of Faith tour.

“So many of our alumni have seen her on the stage of Women of Faith, so it is only natural they are excited about getting to know her in a more intimate setting,” O’Banion said. “Luci has graciously offered to speak to our alumni and campus community, as well as spend some time with female ministry students earlier in the day.”

The event was planned for the arena of the Mayborn Campus Center so that not only students but members of the community could take part in the event.

“Luci has had such an impact on the world with her humor, her wisdom and her life of adventure and joy,” O’Banion said. “We are excited to let her share some of her experiences with the UMHB family and community.”

For more information or to request tickets to the An Evening With Luci Swindoll event, contact the UMHB Alumni Association at alumni@umhb.edu.

Kelsey Belcher, Kelsey Kunk, and Elizabeth Stefanski represented UMHB at the Alpha Chi national convention in Chicago.

Belton, TX – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor graduate Kelsey Kunk and seniors Elizabeth Stefanski and Kelsey Belcher spent their spring break at the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society’s annual convention in Chicago. All three participated in the student presentation competition with both Stefanski and Belcher earning top honors.

Kunk presented in the Alumni category on the subject of “Suicide Assessment in the Emergency Department.”  Belcher participated in the World History category, where her presentation, “Dissection, Body Snatchers, and Reform,” was awarded first place. Stefanski’s presentation, “How do Movies Affect the Readership of Young Adult Books,” was entered in the American Literature category and also won first place.

Student presentations were judged on focus, organization, complexity, use of research, audience engagement, and contribution to scholarship in the field. Both Stefanski and Belcher’s awards came with $100 prizes. The two students were also recognized with regional Alpha Chi scholarships in the amounts of $1,200 and $1,000, respectively

Alpha Chi is a national college honor society. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution's juniors, and seniors. Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional chapter. Founded in 1934, the Texas Beta Chapter at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is the second oldest chapter in the United States. There are currently 300 chapters of Alpha Chi, located in almost every state and in Puerto Rico. More than 12,000 members are inducted each year.

Graduate Counseling Program Receives Second Accreditation

The UMHB Graduate School of Counseling has been recognized by CACREP with its second accreditation.

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Graduate School of Counseling has been recognized by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) with the accreditation of its Marriage, Family & Child Counseling degree. This is the second UMHB counseling program to earn this classification.

“When CACREP came in 2012 to review our Clinical and Mental Health Counseling program, they were so impressed with the Marriage and Family program that they encouraged us to submit it for accreditation,” Dr. Marta Garrett, director of UMHB’s Graduate Counseling Program, said.

There are only 15 universities in the state of Texas that offer an accredited master’s program in counseling. UMHB is one of only two Christian universities to offer such programs. With this recognition UMHB becomes the only Christian university in the state to offer students a choice of accredited programs.

“Everyone involved with the program is so excited because when we had the one accredited program, it attracted people,” Garret said. “People who knew they needed accreditation would come here.”

“Some who might have been interested in the Marriage and Family track felt stuck picking the other one so their degree would be accredited,” Garrett said. “Now our students can make the choice that best fits their career goals.”

CACREP accreditation is a signal of quality to prospective students. It also has significant implications for graduates when they begin practicing. Three federal agencies have made graduation from a CACREP accredited program a requirement for independent practice in counseling. This means that just being a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) will no longer qualify a counselor to work with any patient affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs or TRICARE, and only LPCs with a degree from a CACREP accredited program will be able to be employed as a Fully Functioning Army Substance Abuse Program Practitioner through the Army Substance Abuse Program.

“In this part of Texas many of our patients are going to be affiliated with the military,” Garrett said. “That means that one of the largest areas of work as a mental health professional is federally funded dollars, and, after 2017, you’ll have to have an accredited degree to work with the federal government.”

The value of this recognition applies not just to current and future students in the program but also to graduates going back to July of 2013. UMHB faculty and staff contacted each of the students who had graduated in that time to inform them of their new and unexpected accreditation.

“The return on investment for their degrees just went through the roof,” Garrett said. “It is quite possible that they now have a 50 or even 100% higher income ceiling than before this announcement.”

In order to become accredited, a counselor education program must fulfill certain requirements or standards with regard to institutional settings, program mission and objectives, program content, practicum experiences, student selection and advising, faculty qualifications and workload, program governance, instructional support, and self-evaluation.

UMHB Plans 76th Easter Pageant

The 76th Easter Pageant will be held April 1, at 12:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.

Belton, Texas – On Wednesday, April 1, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will host its 76th Annual Easter Pageant. There will be three performances in front of the Luther Memorial arches on Vann Circle Drive at 12:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. Each of these performances is free and open to the public.

UMHB’s Easter Pageant has become a tradition for many Central Texas families. Hundreds of UMHB students and children from the community will participate in the Easter Pageant.

Each year Dr. Randy O’Rear, president of UMHB, selects one outstanding student for the honor of portraying Jesus. This casting is based less on acting ability than on a strong Christian faith and attitude. This year Nathan Forrester of Dallas, will play Christ. O’Rear also decides which female student will play the role of Mary, mother of Christ. This year, the role went to Jasmine Simmons of Red Oak. The final position selected by O’Rear was that of the pageant’s director, Payton Pierce of Grapevine, TX.

“It came as a shock. They’re trusting me with one of the longest running, biggest traditions one campus,” Pierce said. “I still have thoughts of ‘How did I get picked to do this?’”

Pierce let Forrester and Simmons take part in the casting process. Forrester chose his own group of disciples, and Simmons hand-picked this year’s mourners.

“Nathan’s disciples are a very interesting and diverse group, but they are very easy to lead,” Pierce said. “It’s really cool to watch them at practice interact with one another and the rest of the cast.”

“I saw an international student accidentally walk right into practice one day at Luther, and I remember wondering what was going to happen,” Pierce said. “I watched Reagan (who is playing Simon) walk up to him, shake his hand, and begin explaining what this was all about, and he was so receptive to it.”

The production features many moments from the life and ministry of Christ, including His triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, His trial by Pontius Pilate, crucifixion, death, and resurrection. The production will also include musical performances.

“It’s being a part of a story that’s so much bigger than yourself,” Pierce said. “This is more than a tradition. It’s more than just an event we do once a year. It’s a display of a relationship that we get to have with a God who is much bigger than we can ever imagine.”

Pierce knows there will be people in the audience who aren’t Christians, and she hopes that the pageant might open some eyes.

“It’s our job to be stewards of His story,” Pierce said. “My greatest hope is that people would come away with a new perspective on the Gospel and what it means for them, for this university, and for the community.”

“I’ve stressed this to the cast many times, ‘Your expression in a scene could be a trigger point for someone. Your joyful reaction when a disciple tells you that Jesus has risen could be a moment of revelation for someone that Jesus is no longer dead, and, in the same way, we are no longer dead in our sins when we accept him.’”

The tradition of the annual Easter Pageant at UMHB began in 1940, when it was held during the afternoon on Easter Day. At that time, Mary Hardin-Baylor was an all-female campus, so all of the roles were played by women. Over time, the production expanded to include male students and additional performances during the day.

The remaining roles will be played by:

Luci Swindoll

Belton, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Alumni Association hosted an evening with acclaimed speaker and best-selling author Luci Swindoll on Thursday, March 26, in the arena of the Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center.

Throughout the evening, Swindoll gave advice to the hundreds in attendance.

“If you want to be in ministry you can, and you will,” Swindoll said. “but you have to say to the Lord, ‘I want to do it your way,’ and he will start opening the doors.”

Swindoll looked to her own life and inspiration she felt to be true to God and herself.

“Don’t let your mind distract you from being present. If you’re not present in the moment, you will miss the ‘now.’ And ‘now’ is all we have,” she continued. “The greatest influence you can have in this world is to simply be who you are. As long as you are dedicated to God, he will work out the details.”

During the event, Swindoll was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.

Swindoll is UMHB alumna from the class of 1955. Throughout her life, she has embraced a spirit of adventure, visiting every continent over 58 international trips. Swindoll spent 30 years working as a corporate executive for Mobil Oil, she worked as a professional opera singer, and has written more than a dozen books. Today she travels the nation, speaking to more than 350,000 women each year as one of the original speakers of the Women of Faith tour.
