Sunday, August 6, 2017

Belton, Texas - As the construction of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s new performing arts center nears completion, the university announced today that it will be named the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center.

“We are proud that this beautiful new center at the front door of our campus will be named to honor our great friend Sue Mayborn and her late husband, Frank Mayborn, for their longstanding and unwavering commitment to UMHB,” said Dr. Randy O’Rear, UMHB president. “They have enriched the educational experiences of countless UMHB students, and we are delighted that this significant addition to the campus will carry their names.”

Frank Mayborn was a man of action. He was a visionary with the ability to recognize needs, problems, and challenges of the future and take immediate action in the present. For more than 50 years, he devoted his time and energy to the betterment of Central Texas and his journalism and broadcast endeavors. Until his death in 1987, perhaps no other man’s influence had been more pervasive and the fruits of his work more evident on the face of Central Texas than those of Frank Mayborn.

“I regret that I never had the opportunity to meet Frank Mayborn,” said President O’Rear. “Clearly he is deserving of the many accolades he still receives to this day. However, I have had the great pleasure of working closely with Sue Mayborn for many years, and I have seen first-hand how the lives of UMHB students have been enriched, thanks to her vision, leadership, and philanthropy.”

In 1988 Sue Mayborn established the Frank W. Mayborn Chair of Arts and Sciences at UMHB. She was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Humanities by UMHB in 1991, in recognition of her dedication to the university and her commitment and volunteer efforts in Bell County and the State of Texas. Her passion for UMHB’s Christian mission has been demonstrated through her partnership over the years in the construction of the Frank & Sue Mayborn Campus Center and the Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center, as well as in the establishment of endowed scholarships for students.

“Sue served as a member of our Board of Trustees from 2008 through 2016, and her active involvement helped shape the future of Mary Hardin-Baylor. UMHB will never be the same, thanks to Sue. Her impact on our university and Central Texas will live on forever,” said O’Rear.

The Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center is a 40,725-square-foot building that features a 525-seat performance hall with a proscenium stage, fly space, and orchestra pit. The ingenious design of the center includes many multifunctional rooms which allow it to be used as a teaching facility through the school year as well as a venue for musical and theatrical performances. Located near the entrance of the campus on the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, the beautiful new center is in its final stages of completion and will be formally dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 13.

Hershall Seals Presents A Moby Dick Experience

Monday, August 14, 2017

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Visual and Performing Arts and the UMHB Art Department are proud to present the exhibition A Moby Dick Experience: Hershall Seals. The exhibit will be on display from Monday, August 21, though Friday, September 22, in the gallery of the Baugh Center for Visual Arts on the UMHB campus. A reception and artist’s talk will be free and open to the public at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 21, in the Hughes Recital Hall in Presser Hall.

The presentation consists of a multimedia display of sound, light, and painting on the subject of the last three chapters of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Seals, chair of the UMHB art department, created three large, mixed media acrylic paintings that visually portray the feeling of impending disaster and demise of the crew of whalers who hunted the white whale around the world.

Other features accompanying the exhibit include a voice narration, projected water patterns, and whale songs intended to immerse viewers in a full sensory experience.

The literary inspiration of Moby Dick has been a challenge for many artists since the Romantic period. Seals expresses his 20-year fascination with the story as a metaphor for seeking, as Melville writes, “the ungraspable phantom of life.”

“Leaving the port of safety and hunting an elusive goal under the surface is another way of saying how mysterious and surprising the search for a personal abstract visual language has been for me,” Seals said.

The gallery of the Baugh Center for the Visual Arts is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, please visit the art department website or call the College of Visual and Performing Arts at 254- 295-4678.

Meyer Family Foundation Makes Gift to Performing Arts Center

Friday, August 18, 2017

Belton, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor officials announced today that the Paul and Jane Meyer Family Foundation has made a gift of $700,000 for the construction of the university’s new performing arts center.

“Jane Meyer’s commitment to Christian higher education, coupled with her generous heart, has made her one of UMHB’s greatest champions,” said Dr. Randy O’Rear, president of the university. “When she learned that we had the opportunity to qualify for a challenge grant that would allow us to complete the new center debt free, she wanted to be a part of the effort.  She is an amazing lady, and we are truly grateful for her continued investment in Mary Hardin-Baylor.”

The family foundation’s gift for the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center is but the latest of a series of significant gifts to the university. In 2003, Paul and Jane Meyer made the lead gift for the Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center, which houses UMHB’s College of Christian Studies; in 2011, Jane Meyer again stepped forward with the lead gift for a state-of-the-art nursing education center, which was named in memory of Paul’s mother, Isabelle Rutherford Meyer, who was an educator and nurse.

In gratitude for this latest gift, the building’s 2,000-square-foot rehearsal hall will carry the Meyer name.  The Paul & Jane Meyer Rehearsal Hall will serve as both a classroom and a rehearsal space for theatrical and musical productions.  The room’s dimensions mirror the dimensions of the stage in the nearby performance hall so that students will be able to practice for upcoming productions there as easily as they would be able to on the stage.

The Meyer Family Foundation gift moves the university significantly closer to its goal of completing the terms of a challenge grant offered by an anonymous donor in June 2016, which required the university to raise $5 million in gifts toward the project by August 31, 2017.

The Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center is a 40,725-square-foot building that features a 525-seat performance hall with a proscenium stage, fly space, and orchestra pit. The ingenious design of the center includes many multifunctional rooms which allow it to be used as a teaching facility as well as a venue for musical and theatrical performances. Located near the entrance of the campus on the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, the $20 million center is in its final stages of completion and will be formally dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 13.

Fall 2017 Convocation Set

Belton, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will hold its 172nd Fall Convocation ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, in the arena of the Frank & Sue Mayborn Campus Center on the UMHB campus. The event, which inaugurates the official opening of the new academic school year, is free and open to the public.

Rev. Willie Earl Robertson, pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Temple, will be the guest speaker during the service. The title of his address is “Planning and Preparing for Positive Impact.”

Robertson was born and raised in Temple. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1965 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and sociology from Paul Quinn College in 1970.  After college, he worked as a research technologist for Scott & White Memorial Hospital. He served on the Temple Independent School District Board of Trustees from late 1970s to the mid-1980s and was the first black school board president for TISD. In 1984, he surrendered to the call of God to preach, and in September 1988, he became the pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

Robertson was elected to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Board of Trustees in 2004 and is serving in his second term on the board (2004-2012, and 2014-the present).  He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee 2006-2012, and again 2014—the present, and was chair of the trustees’ Campus Planning Committee 2010-2012, when the most recent Campus Master Plan was developed and adopted.  He and his wife, Lucille, reside in Temple; they are the parents of Gay Dawn Robertson Justice and have one grandson, William Justice.

The event will also feature a performance by the vocal ensemble One Voice and a parade of flags representing the nations around the globe and states across the country from which UMHB students traveled to come to the university. This year’s ceremony will include flags representing the 30 countries and 31 states from which this year’s UMHB students originate.

Belton, Texas – On Wednesday, August 23, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor held its 172nd Fall Convocation. The ceremony celebrated the beginning of the new academic school year.

The event opened with a processional of faculty members and administrators, followed by a parade of flags. The 62 flags represented the nations around the globe and states around the country from which students have come to UMHB this year.

“As you can see, this year’s student body comes from all over the world, representing 31 states and 31 countries,” President Randy O’Rear said.

O’Rear gave some added details about this year’s new students, noting that they range in age from 15 to 74. Additionally, he pointed out that roughly 200 of those students are the first from their families to attend college.

The university’s One Voice ensemble gave a rousing performance of “We Are Family,” that had the crowd clapping in unison.

Rev. Willie Earl Robertson, pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Temple, was the guest speaker. He encouraged students to discover their strengths and weaknesses.

“As those strengths and weaknesses become known, seek the assistance of those who have been divinely placed in your path to recognize your gifts and to guide you into those vocations where you will be impacted positively and will impact others,” Robertson said.

Robertson also implored his audience to build relationships and support one another while on campus.

“I want you to know that your University of Mary Hardin-Baylor family is doing life with you,” Robertson said, “and all of this, young people, is vital to your preparation, preparation that will equip you to enter into your fine destiny.”

Robertson closed by expressing his high hopes for all those in attendance.

“I’m excited about the journey that you’ve started here today,” Robertson said. “I’m praising and thanking God that you decided to choose the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, because I’m already expecting and eagerly anticipating the positive impact that will bless you in such a time as this.”

Sunday, August 27, 2017

Belton, Texas – When the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor opens in a few weeks, it will be debt free. This was made possible by a $5 million challenge grant from an anonymous donor and the generosity of UMHB alumni, friends, faculty and staff who matched the grant with $5 million in gifts.

“When we received the challenge grant, we were about halfway to our goal of funding the $20 million project,” said Dr. Rebecca O’Banion, vice president for development. “The challenge grant generated a lot of excitement among UMHB’s donors, and we are truly blessed that so many people invested in this beautiful new facility.”

“This is the final project in the bold $100 million Campus Master Plan approved by our Board of Trustees in February 2011,” said Dr. Randy O’Rear, university president. “Once again donors have stepped forward to ensure UMHB continues to offer the finest in Christian higher education. This state-of-the-art facility will significantly enhance our students’ opportunities to experience and participate in the performing arts. Every space was strategically designed to provide for both teaching as well as performance needs.”

Belton, Texas – On Saturday, September 9, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusader football program opened its season against the Lobos of Sul Ross State. The CRU emerged victorious with a score of 23 to 7 in a game that featured several special recognitions and celebrations.

Prior to the game, Congressman John Carter presented Coach Pete Fredenburg with a copy of the Congressional record entry that he made before the United States House of Representatives in January.

“While the Stagg Bowl was contested over the span of four quarters, for UMHB it was a championship 19 years in the making,” the document reads. “A program built from scratch by Coach Pete Fredenburg nearly two decades ago can now call itself the best in the land.”

Before this year’s team took the field, the 3,856 fans in attendance were treated to a highlight reel from the CRU’s victory in last year’s Stagg Bowl. Before the video was over, the stands of Crusader Stadium were shaking with cheers, applause, and more than a few tears. At its conclusion, seniors from last year’s squad walked to center field, the National Championship trophy held high, prompting another loud ovation. From the fifty-yard line, the former players had a perfect view of the plaque unveiled below the stadium big screen. It reads, simply, “2016 National Champions.”

With the crowd primed, this year’s team ran onto the field. Congressman Carter returned to preside over the coin toss and get the contest started.

With this win, the CRU open their 2017 season with both an overall and conference record of 1-0. Their next game will be held Saturday, September 16, against Linfield College in McMinnville, Portland.

Monday, October 2, 2017

Belton, Texas – On Friday, October 13, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will celebrate the dedication of the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will begin at 1:00 p.m. in front of the new building on the corner of North Pearl Street and West Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

The short program will include remarks by President Randy O’Rear and Ted Barnes, dean of the College of Visual & Performing Arts. Following a prayer of dedication and the ceremonial ribbon cutting, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the facility and learn about its unique features from some of the students who will be performing in the center in the days to come.

The Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center is a 40,725-square-foot building; the highlight of the center is the 525-seat Baugh Performance Hall, which features a proscenium stage, fly space, and orchestra pit. The design of the center includes multifunctional rooms which allow it to be used as a teaching facility as well as a venue for musical and theatrical performances. Through the support of generous alumni and friends of the university, the $20 million building was completed debt-free.

Friday, October 13, 2017

Belton, Texas – On Thursday, October 12, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor held a joint concert by acclaimed Christian artist Sandy Patty and vocal group Veritas in the Baugh Performance Hall of the new Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center. This private event was attended by more than 500 of the donors who made the facility possible.

President Randy O’Rear took the stage before the concert to voice his appreciation to the capacity crowd.

“Thanks to all of you, tonight we open the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center debt-free,” O’Rear said.

O’Rear also presented the John & Mary Hardin Visionary Leadership Award to Sue Mayborn. The award was created in 2011 to recognize individuals whose philanthropic leadership was transformational for the university. The award gets its name from John and Mary Hardin, whose $100,000 donation in 1933 made it possible for the college to remain open amid the Great Depression. This recognition has only been made on two previous occasions, the recognize Jane Meyer and Elizabeth and Drayton Mclane Jr.

“Tonight, we couldn’t think of any better way to open this amazing facility than to present the John & Mary Hardin Visionary Leadership Award to Sue Mayborn,” O’Rear said. “Thank you for the difference and great investment you continue to make in Mary Hardin-Baylor.”

As O’Rear left the stage, the curtains began to rise to reveal an orchestra and concert choir consisting of many UMHB students. After the musicians began to play, Patty was announced and took the stage to thunderous applause.

After performing her first two songs, Patty took a moment to compliment the instrumentalists and student choir.

“It is just such a pleasure, even today, to watch you discover music and find something new,” Patty said before turning to the audience. “This is the future of our world, and it looks like we’re in pretty good hands.”

Patty was joined on stage by both her husband, Don Peslis, and the vocal group Veritas. These groups joined their talents in performances of both new pieces and classic hymns.

At the conclusion of the concert, the artists sang “We Shall Behold Him” and brought the audience to its feet before the last notes could be played.

Patty has won five Grammy® awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three platinum records, five gold records, and 40 Dove Awards. To date, she has released more than 30 albums. She is currently traveling the country on her Forever Grateful tour.

Hundreds attended the event, which was held in front of the facility, located near the entrance to campus on the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

“This building is beautiful, and it is a game changer for the arts at UMHB. It makes a powerful statement about our commitment to our students and our desire to offer exceptional academic programs that distinguish Mary Hardin-Baylor as a leading university,” President Randy O’Rear said.

During his remarks, O’Rear expressed gratitude to the donors. He thanked those in attendance for helping the university to open the facility debt-free. He also spoke directly to the students and faculty who will be making use of the center.

“You deserve this facility, and it was built with you in mind,” O’Rear said. “For many years your accomplishments have far exceeded our facilities. With this new building we are finally able to showcase your wonderful talents. I can’t wait to watch you perform here.”

Ted Barnes, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, spoke about the influence the new building will have on campus life.

“This facility will impact our students in many ways, and not just the students involved in our performance program,” Ted Barnes, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts said. “It will provide all UMHB students the opportunity to more fully experience a comprehensive education, one that includes strong cultural components.”

UMHB Hosts Science Saturday

Monday, October 23, 2017

Belton, TX – On Saturday, October 28, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will host Science Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the York Science Center and Wells Science Hall on the UMHB campus. This event, which is designed to let young people and their families engage with science in fun and exciting ways, is open the public. The price of admission is one non-perishable food item per family.

“This year we are putting a focus on the event being student-led, student-driven, and student-focused,” Dr. Kaleb Heinrich said.

“We have around 70 student and faculty volunteers,” Heinrich said. “It keeps getting bigger, and bigger. This may be our biggest one yet.”

This year’s event will feature some popular demonstrations and activities from previous Science Saturdays, including a digital experience designed by Computer Science and Engineering students, and pig dissections being conducted by representatives of the Biology Department.

“Kids can put on gloves and explore actual anatomy if they want,” Heinrich said. “For some that might be too gross, but others get really excited.”

There are also a number of groups that have developed new offerings for this year’s Science Saturday, including a hands-on genetics activity that challenges them to build their own monster.

Heinrich says that Science Saturday is geared mostly for children under the age of twelve.

“I’m going to be bringing my two-year-old,” Heinrich said, “and I think there are some things that he will be excited to do.”

Assistant Professor Wins Film Festival Grand Prix

Friday, October 27, 2017

Belton, TX – The Andru Anderson, Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, worked on his documentary Turn Left Now: Surviving the Unbelievable for years. Those efforts were recognized by an international film festival, when jury for the 17th International Festival of Red Cross and Health Films gave him its Grand Prix Award.

“I almost fell out of my bed,” Anderson said of receiving the news via a phone call. “I was overwhelmed by that.”

Anderson’s film was among 130 judged by the festival jury, who selected from a pool of 1,896 submissions. Turn Left Now follows the story of five young stroke victims as they work to recover and reclaim a sense of normalcy in their lives.

Anderson served as the film’s producer, director, cinematographer, and even did the first edit. His hands on approach meant that he was able to produce his movie on his terms and for a budget that he says was limited to the $70 he spent to have it the final product transcribed.

“My budget was pretty much just my time,” Anderson said. “That’s why it took so long to finish.”

While the film has only been seen by a handful of people to date, Anderson is looking forward to a special screening scheduled on Thursday, November 2, at 6:30 in the Sue & Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center. This will be the first time Anderson will have the chance to experience his film with an audience.

“It’s really overcoming adversity,” Anderson said. “Working on this project and watching this group of people take on disabilities, including the temporary loss of a limb or the ability to talk has really helped grow my appreciation for the human spirit.”

The 17th International Festival of Red Cross and Health Films was held in Varna, Bulgaria under the patronage of Vice President Iliana Iotova. More than 200 films from 49 countries were presented. The festival featured international competition in three categories, Red Cross/Red Crescent Films, Documentaries, and Feature Films. Awards were given to films from Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Doctor of Physical Therapy students were out in force to support Arc of Bell County at its Fun Night event on Thursday, November 2, at the Wilson Park Recreation Center in Temple. UMHB graduate students provided ways for community members to test their balance, flexibility, agility and how fast they can walk using crutches and other assistive devices.

The Arc of Bell County is a non-profit organization, which provides year round activities for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD), such as Thursday Fun Night, Four Day Camp, holiday parties, and opportunities to play sports. University physical therapy students Hayes Engholm, Arash Kaviani, Jacob McCarthy, Luis Mejia, and Zach Smith have been serving as volunteer coaches this fall for Fun Nights.

While planning Movement for Health to celebrate World Physical Therapy Day, UMHB physical therapy students sought an organization with a similar passion for being active to designate as their fundraising recipient.  Arc of Bell County and its activity and sports training programs was a natural fit.  Through monetary donations, baked goods, and t-shirt sales, 87 students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program raised $842 for Arc of Bell County.
